Fit Leaders Needed:

Now More Than Ever

As we near the end of 2008, I am struck by the realization that the world needs fit leaders now more than ever.  Everywhere we look, we see signs of confusion, fear and paralysis.  This downward spiral, reinforced by daily (if not hourly) doses of negativity fueled by the media and the stock market's volatile ups and downs, is causing many to wonder when and how we will ever get out of this mess.

If ever there was a time for leaders to lead, the time is now.  The world is gasping for fresh air and new perspectives, capable of inspiring hope and a more positive way forward.  A new brand of leader -- the Fit Leader -- is required to help move us into the new future we both desire and deserve.  Leaders who develop and sustain a high level of leadership fitness™ will be in the best position to transform our current reality and create bold new possibilities.

When I look back over the last twelve months, I am most proud of the opportunities our clients have given us to enhance the leadership fitness™ of their executives by increasing their clarity, confidence, effectiveness and vitality.  In many cases, we have worked with our clients in a one-on-one coaching capacity, spending anywhere from six months to a year serving as their confidential and experienced guide to discovering and then acting upon new possibilities and perspectives.

In other cases, we have worked with our clients to develop multi-month leadership learning programs focused on the specific learning needs of their teams.  One unique program launched earlier this year is our Institute for Leadership Fitness™, which I have described in previous newsletters.  This twelve-month leadership development experience for those seeking greater clarity, confidence, effectiveness and vitality has so far enrolled over 40 leaders from eight different organizations.  Just this month, we have announced dates and locations for 10 additional programs in 2009.

It is very exciting to watch the participants of our Institutes begin to implement the practices we teach in our program.  Because this program integrates workshop learning throughout the year with one-on-one executive coaching, we have the ability to guide and reinforce the transformation to leadership fitness™ that our participants seek.

I would like to offer my personal gratitude to all of the clients we have had the privilege of serving this year and in each of the seven years we have been operating as an executive coaching and management development firm.  Next month begins our eighth year in business as we look forward to expanding our impact in the world by continuing to develop Fit Leaders.

Best wishes to you and yours for a very happy holiday season and a healthy and prosperous new year!

One More Thing

Perhaps the most valuable possession is not a won election, a bank account, a group of friends, a functioning organization, a master plan, a perfect schedule or even an effective evaluation.  It turns out, after all is said and done, that the finest tool available is Time, that stuff of which minutes, hours, days, months and years are composed.

When you're a leader, there simply isn't enough time to do all you want to do, even though you use every second of every minute to achieve what must be done.  In fact, the busier we are, the faster time seems to fly.  But time today is hard to grasp and hold until you discover the leprechaun that it is -- held, used, caught in something important, and then the golden time of your life is at hand.

There is a time to lead. It is now.  There is a time to think.  It is now.  There is a time to believe and become and behold,  Leadership must be the measure of the time of your life -- because now is the time to lead.

Getting a Grip on

Your Business

Each month, we review a book selected to both engage and challenge leaders as they seek to make a difference in their organizations.

Traction: Get a Grip on Your Business

Our pick this month is Traction: Get a Grip on Your Business by Gino Wickman.

In Traction, Wickman presents a six-part Entrepreneurial Operating System® or EOS.  While

Creating a vision that is clear and shared by all, and ensuring that each employee is "the right person in the right seat" are at the heart of the EOS.  Being able to predict future results based on standard data reporting and nurturing a high level of accountability, discipline and execution round out the organization's path to success and profitability.

This book provides a practical guide to implementing EOS and to strengthening each of the six key components contributing to the sustainability of any organization.
