Why Leaders Must Be Clear
More than anything else, employees seek clarity from their leaders. Leaders lacking clarity, and leaders that do not take the time to provide clear direction to their teams, create an environment where staff are forced to choose among multiple priorities. This often results in employees concluding "we don't know where we are going" or "I'm not sure what I am supposed to be working on".
Operating from a place of confusion or contradiction is obviously not a productive platform from which to lead. It is, at best, very distracting for employees who are looking for where to focus their often scarce resources of time and energy. At its worst, it can create a crisis of credibility for the leader.
When employees look to leadership for direction, and it is not there, team members begin to wonder whether their senior management (or anyone for that matter) is steering the ship.
To learn more about bringing clarity to your team, and for a list of questions leaders must be prepared to ask and answer regarding their organization's core purpose and priorities, we invite you to download our free special report called The Four Dynamic Qualities of Leadership Fitness™. |

From Last Resort to
Standard Leadership Fare
Leadership development programs continue to evolve from an historical reliance on classroom-type learning and job rotations to more of an emphasis on 360-degree feedback, action learning and individual or team coaching.
Once used only as a last resort to salvage troubled staffers, coaching now is part of the standard leadership development regimen for many executives and other talented "high potentials." As reported on CNN, leading companies from around the world are now providing their best employees with what "star athletes have long had: a trusted advisor to help (them) reach their goals."
Coaching programs are often employed to help a team or an individual achieve greater clarity of vision or purpose, and to increase self awareness (an important component of emotional intelligence).
Coaching solutions are increasingly becoming the strategy of choice for HR executives working to prevent what the Conference Board has called the four most important derailers facing business leaders today:
-
hesitancy to take necessary business risks,
-
personal arrogance and insensitivity,
-
controlling leadership style, and
-
reluctance to tackle difficult people issues.
In Executive Coaching, learn what questions to ask when selecting a coach.

One Last Thing
"I sincerely wish that you will have the experience of thinking up a new idea, organizing it, and following it through to completion, and then having it be magnificently successful. I also hope you'll go through the same process and have something totally 'bomb out.'
I wish that you could achieve some great good for mankind, but have nobody know about it except you.
I wish you could find something so worthwhile that you deem it worthy of investing your life.
I hope you give so much of yourself that some days you wonder if it's all worthwhile.
I wish for you a magnificent obsession that will give you a reason for living and a purpose for life.
I wish for you the worst kind of criticism for everything you do, because that makes you fight beyond what you normally would.
I wish for you the experience of leadership."

The Leadership
Collection™

Each month, we will review a book from The Leadership Collection™
selected to both engage and challenge leaders as they seek to make a difference in their organizations.
Our pick this month is The Dream Manager by Matthew Kelly. In this book, leaders discover the important role they play in helping their employees, at all levels of the organization, achieve their dreams.
Whether it is buying a first home, going on a special vacation or improving a relationship that has gone sour, leaders learn how attending to the dreams of their people can lead to dramatic results for the organization as a whole.
Patrick Lencioni, writing in the Foreword to the book, observes that Matthew Kelly's breakthrough idea is "one of those rare discoveries that is as beneficial for employees as it is for a company's bottom line".
Written as a leadership fable, Kelly's message is both authentic and inspiring. At the end of the book, a simple and straightforward four-step process is outlined for leaders interested in rolling out a Dream Manager program of their own. To purchase this book, simply click on its picture.
Next month, we will review:
Why Smart Executives Fail And What You Can Learn From Their Mistakes by Sydney Finkelstein.
